When is a component just not strong enough???
This special symposium outlines the statistics of obesity and the concerns and correlation with device failures. A process for handling client requirements is also included.
There has been a lot of discussion about the obesity epidemic and subsequent impact on the equipment required for patients using all sorts of assisstive technology. This is of particular concern to amputees who by definition are continuously loading their prostheses.
Testing Standards are also making us more aware of the limitations that the devices or components may be designed for and there are often many calims as to what components can withstand with very little to substantiate this in the real clinical environment.
At the same time there has been a trend towards using lighter weight components to lighten the entire device and this has introduced more innovative designs and exotic materials which also impact in the use, consideration and longevity of the component.
Serious concerns comes about from the combination of all of these factors.
What causes the devices to fail and how are we ensuring the safety of clients whether obese or outside the guidelines of use of these devices? This is the fundamental question which needs to be addressed before we can choose suitable components to assist with avaoiding any problems.
Failure and management analysis will be considered for these cases and an indepth look at the pitfalls for the health professional when addressing the technology required for this part of the population.
This symposium was first conducted at the annual meeting of the AAOP (USA) - New Orleans (2004) and was very well recieved. |
