John W. Michael, MEd, CPO/LPO, FISPO, FAAOP Mr. Michael is Licensed and Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist with a longstanding interest in clinical education. He is a charter member of the Upper Limb Prosthetics and Gait Societies of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) and has lectured widely in the US, Canada and abroad on a variety of prosthetic and orthotic topics. Mr. Michael is active in a number of professional societies and disability groups and has been a member of the Academy (AAOP), the Canadian Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CAPO), and the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) since the 1970's. He has previously served as President of the Academy (AAOP), as an official consultant to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and as an advisor to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is a Chair Emeritus of the US Member Society of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and has been named as a Fellow of that organization. Mr. Michael has numerous publications on prosthetic and orthotic topics in a variety of texts and refereed journals including the Journal of Prosthetics & Orthotics (JPO), Clinical Prosthetics & Orthotics (CPO), Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation: State of the Art Reviews, Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics, Palaestra, the North Carolina Medical Journal, and Clinical Orthopaedics & Related Research (CORR). He served as co-Editor for the Atlas of Limb Prosthetics, authoring six chapters in the volume, and contributed to the Atlas of Orthoses and Assistive Devices as well. In addition to serving on the Editorial Board for the JPO, Biomechanics, Palaestra and for the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA), Mr. Michael has been the Editor for a special issue of the JPO dedicated to pediatric topics. Mr. Michael is a recipient of the AAOP’s 1992 "Outstanding Clinician Award" and the 1997 “Distinguished Practitioner Award”, and was named a Fellow of the Academy in 1998.
