Case Studies of Recurring Problems
Participants in the 19th November 2004 videoconference provided a range
of solutions to the following prosthetic issues raised in five complex
transtibial cases:
- Indications for a delayed post trauma tta
- Loss of area and quality of loading tissues
- Nerve injury and loss of sensation
- Management in the setting of nerve injury and autonomic pain
- Accommodation of large stump/high body weight and oedema
- Using multiple prostheses
- Dermatological factors including sebaceous cysts prevention and
management
- Use of silicon systems advantages and complications
- Cleaning silicon and gel interfaces including sterilization
- Importance of delineating medical, stump, prosthetic and
environmental factors
- Expectations of amputation
- Psychological adaptation to amputation and need to mobilize
Certain issues raised require further clarification such as how to
sterilize the variety of interfaces and associated protocols. This
