Wage Cost Index

"Wage cost indexes are 'cocktail' indexes comprised of a measure of change in wage costs (the Safety Net Adjustment - expressed as a percentage of AWOTE) and a measure of changes in non-wage costs (Underlying Consumer Price Index CPI-U). These Wage Costs Indexes are weighted in four proportions of wage to non-wage costs: 40/60 (WCI 6), 60/40 (WCI 3), 75/25 (WCI 1) and 90/10 (WCI 2),to make up the set of Wage Cost Indexes."

 Historical Figure (as at 1st July 1999)

A full calculation of this figure is available for our supporters.

The calculation is based on historical data for the hourly rate paid in various ALS schemes and is multiplied by an index for National labour cost increment changes (WCI1 the Wage Cost Indicator 1 calculated quarterly).

The historical data used is what is current on the 1st of July 1999 and beyond this it is influenced by WCI1 rather than any increments negotiated by individuals, States or Territories. (Other appropriate indices may become available in the future). The aim is to provide a recognised indexed rate rather than an average of what is occuring.
